ABSTRACT

There is scarce information on the loss of fruits and vegetables registered in the wholesale market of Mexico City, one of the biggest wholesale markets in the world. Considering the above, it is important to generate data on the losses generated in Mexico City wholesale market and to analyze the economic impact of these losses in the region. To achieve this objective, we visited the fruit and vegetable sector. We obtained the data of the food loss registered by the administrators of the visited stores, which was obtained by the difference in the weight of the truck that transported the product. We also interviewed persons in charge of transport and the administrators/ transporters of the visited stores to assess the measures taken during the transportation and selling of the products. The economic impact was quantified by a formulae adapted for the situation. We also carried out an analysis of the transportation in the food loss. Results confirmed that a great quantity 146of fruit and vegetables are loss and that this loss has a huge impact in the region. To our knowledge, this is the first time such information will be available to the scientific community and the public.
