ABSTRACT

There is tremendous interest in wearable sensor development for biomedical and security applications. Current perceptions towards novel sensor fabrication techniques and electrochemical methods have resulted in the demonstration of chemical and biosensors which are able to advance conventional measurements thus offering additional extents of unique and rich analytical information to the wearer in a judicious manner. Electrochemical wearable sensors have been developed on various substrates such as gloves, bandages, textiles, tattoo, eyeglasses, ring and microneedle as a sensor platform for diverse sensing applications owed to their exceptional capability towards the detection of target analytes in a non/minimally‐invasive and unobtrusive manner. Thus, multiplex sensor operations can easily be performed in real time to establish the health of the patient/wearer and also assess the own environment to identify potential chemical threats. Such wearable sensors have also been developed specifically for security and environmental applications. Several analytes such as nerve agents, explosives, opioids and gun-shot residues have been tested at different period. In view of real applications, flexible and stretchable sensor were also developed in recent past with good analytical performance. This chapter will outlook the inferences of novel pattern in biomedical, environmental and security application using wearable sensor device. Based on the recent development in wearable sensor arena, it is envisaged that these sensors will certainly play an important and pivotal role in various fields with better sensitivity, higher stability and attractive designs.
