ABSTRACT

Developments in biological and healthcare technologies have been providing us with large volumes of genomic, proteomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic data, including medical image data. Knowledge from these datasets simplifies our understanding of human health and diseases and diagnostics. Developed from artificial neural networks, deep learning-based algorithms show great potential in identifying factors, features, and patterns from complex datasets. The aim of this chapter is to provide an outline of the various deep learning techniques and some of the advanced applications in the biological and healthcare sector. Subsequently, various tools and packages developed by deep learning techniques are discussed. Finally, we present our outlook for the future directions in the area of deep learning.
