ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to discuss and demonstrate the process of sustainability as applied to the implementation of a renewable energy generation option switching a conventional way of utilizing resources in the fields. All the three pillars of sustainability will be examined, viz., the environmental sustainability, the social sustainability, and the economic sustainability. This is known as triple bottom line analysis. The existing pattern of wasteful use of the resources in the farming activity, particularly (1) open-field burning of wheat straw in the fields and (2) using diesel to generate off-grid electricity, are considered. Possibility of implementing an intermediate pyrolysis process for the better use of these resources is discussed in this chapter. A triple bottom line analysis is carried out for existing and proposed scenario, and the results are discussed in this chapter.
