ABSTRACT

Biomass energy plays an important role in the present and future energy market. The properties of biomass influence the design and operation of storage and conversion systems for biomass, and full understanding of the properties of biomass is important and essential. Knowing the conversion technologies of biomass is helpful for us to acquire the biomass products we need. This chapter initially introduces the properties of biomass, and these include the conventional properties of biomass which are physical properties (moisture content, particle size, bulk density, porosity, etc.) and chemical properties (proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, heating value, etc.), and also new properties of biomass (exergy properties). Then biomass conversion technologies are also detailed, and these include physical technologies, chemical technologies, biochemical technologies, and thermochemical technologies. The contents presented in this chapter not only presents the properties of biomass but also introduces the conversion technologies of biomass. Hopefully, these will contribute significantly to the present and future of biomass energy.
