ABSTRACT

In recent years, the internationally standardized life cycle assessment (LCA) has become an essential method in evaluating the environmental performance of e-waste management. In this chapter, a brief introduction of LCA according to the International Standard Organization (ISO) and the recent progress of LCA approach in managing waste in general was provided. The previous LCA application in e-waste management was explored by focusing on the following aspects: (1) types of e-waste assessed, (2) types of system or technology assessed, (3) the modelling tool and software, (4) functional unit, (5) the selection of impact assessment methodology, (6) the integration of LCA with other methods, and (7) summary of existing LCA studies in e-waste management. This work was followed by the discussion on recent LCA application in evaluation of e-waste management, with some recommendation on future research need in this area was highlighted. This chapter is important to provide an overview on recent progress and future research need of LCA application in assessing the environmental sustainability of e-waste management to students, LCA practitioners, and policy makers.
