ABSTRACT

The management of the growing e-waste stocks is also becoming a pressing need of the immediate addressal in South Asia countries, including Sri Lanka, which are yet to devise a comprehensive legal and policy framework. The recent economic and social developments in Sri Lanka have led to a noticeable rise in the generation of e-waste. However, Sri Lanka faces growing challenges in managing and recycling e-waste for many reasons, which are typical for many countries in developing states. This chapter aims to present the current status of e-waste management in Sri Lanka, its challenges, and potential strategies for overcoming these challenges. The chapter begins by providing an overview of why e-waste management in the Sri Lankan context is important in the South Asian region. It also presents the legal framework for e-waste management, the methodology followed in developing this chapter, and the current status of e-waste management. The chapter also discusses the e-waste management challenges in Sri Lanka from macro, meso, and micro-level perspectives, exploring different remedial strategies.
