ABSTRACT

With the development of nanotechnology, nanomaterials are widely used in a variety of fields due to their unique properties. During the past three decades, there has been growing interest in investigating the possibility of using nanomaterials as lubricant additives to improve the anti-wear and friction reduction properties of lubricants. In this chapter, we focus on the preparation methods and tribological performances of the best-known lubricant nanoadditives. The synthesis and modification processes of typical nanomaterials are described, and the rheology performance of lubricants with nanoadditives is introduced. Then, the anti-wear and friction reduction performances of typical nano lubricant additives are briefly reviewed. The anti-wear and friction reduction mechanisms of nanomaterials are also discussed using particular examples.
