ABSTRACT

Nowadays, the population lives under constant stress conditions due to different factors that often conduct health issues such as anxiety, colitis, and migraines. The need to stay healthy, maintaining the lifestyle leads to the development of functional products using medicinal plants. Passiflora incarnata is well known for its anxiolytic properties and is recommended for nervous restlessness due to its active compounds such as flavonoids and alkaloids, among numerous other constituents. On the other hand, lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a medicinal plant that is used in aromatic beverages and as a natural tranquilizer and is commonly used for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antistress, memory, and concentration improving properties. M. officinalis has shown to possess high levels of phenolics compounds and antioxidant properties and is a potent inhibitor of gamma-aminobutyric acid transaminase. Various combinations and numerous medicinal properties 4of its extract, oil, and leaves make it a multipurpose plant. Passiflora and Melissa phytochemicals were extracted and evaluated for antioxidant activity. Both plants showed high phenolic and flavonoid contents, as well as high antioxidant capacity evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free-radical scavenging capacity.
