ABSTRACT

There are multiple, strong linkages between overweight and obesity and risk factors for cardiovascular disease, in general, and coronary heart disease, in particular. Obesity is very common, both in men and women in the United States. Any significant weight gain in adult years also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Physicians should counsel individuals who are overweight or obese concerning the links between excess weight and risk of cardiovascular disease and treat both the excess weight and also the linkages to heart disease.
