ABSTRACT

Overweight and obesity are extremely common in the United States and around the world. Overweight and obesity are associated with a variety of adverse metabolic consequences, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers as well as the metabolic syndrome. A comprehensive and structured approach including targeted history and physical examination and laboratory data values relevant to individuals who are overweight or obese should be followed. Clinicians should discuss the healthy weight range with all patients, whether or not they are overweight or obese at the time of the clinical encounter.
