ABSTRACT

Having a background in many diverse industries only some of which involve microbiology, this chapter focuses on the aspects of what the author have learned when starting out on the quest to begin a business. When starting a new business or investigating an opportunity, whether it be a general company or one that specifically involves microbiology, one should work backward. What is the need? What is the need that is perceived by the market? What is the value of this need to the buyer? Is the buyer the one who can write the check? In the case of the dental instrument, is it the buyer that will actually be driving the market? In the arena of funding options, we have rather large groups of sources. All the following funding options come with their unique risks: Venture capitalists, vulture capitalists, venture funds, family funds, tertiary market, bankers, crowd funding, angel investors, etc.
