ABSTRACT

Intelligent communities require a huge amount of information in order to monitor various human activities where traditional wireless sensor networks (WSNs) alone cannot fulfill the requirements. Therefore, artificial intelligence approaches are incorporated into the network to make the network intelligent. However, to provide a low-cost solution for such a network, security was overlooked, which made it prone to malicious attacks.  New security technologies and algorithms have been subsequently introduced, but those are unable to meet smart communities' requirements, such as the internet of things (IoT), where WSN acts as a backbone.  When sensors are deployed in a hostile field, security is the major concern as they are vulnerable to a wide range of attacks. As the resources related to sensor nodes are limited, the design of network safety protocols for communication is sometimes challenging even in WSNs. Therefore, security issues in intelligent WSNs have attracted a great deal of attention from researchers in recent years. This chapter analyzes the major security issues posed to researchers in their efforts to introduce cost-effective and stable intelligent WSNs, along with the aspect of further development.
