ABSTRACT

Quality food, health, and environmental security are the major challenges for the modern man. The increase in the population and industrial activities has led to the generation of a variety of wastes that have negative effects on the quality of environs. The lack of resources and innovative techniques for the sustainable management of the waste generated is lacking in most countries. The use of proper bioconversion techniques will result in the production of valuable resources having multiple uses in the different fields of the environment. One of the recently developed bioconversion technique is the mushroom production using organic waste mostly produced from food industries. Cultivating mushrooms on the organic wastes (OWs) reduces 276the burden on disposal of the wastes. This technique helps achieve zero-emission and convert the nutrient-rich wastes into edible form, thereby preventing the wastage of nutrients well as eutrophication of water bodies. The multiple benefits of bioconversion are the conversion of nutrient rich organic waste and the production of quality food (medicinal mushroom) and additional income source for the farmers. Thus, this technique is ecofriendly and sustainable for the production of valuable products and efficient one for the conversion of organic waste.
