ABSTRACT

Microalgae are a favorable source for the production of renewable bioenergy. There are extensive reviews of the use of microalgae for the production of biohydrogen, bioethanol, biofuels, variety of metabolites, and other products of commercial interest such as polysaccharides, triacylglycerols (TAGs), and pigments, among others. Nowadays there 230are two strategies implemented to increase the different products from microalgae. These strategies comprise culture medium optimization and genetic engineering. In this chapter, we summarize what are the best conditions in culture of microalgae and genetic engineering strategies that have been established in some genera of microalgae for the obtaining of different products.
