ABSTRACT

The primary haematite deposit of Bandjeli was extracted between 2008 and 2016 by several open-pit iron ore mining sites implemented by the Indian company MM Mining Ltd. Guided interviews with stakeholder groups and individuals were conducted in the canton of Bandjeli. The extraction did not lead to sustainable and increased economic development or positive long-term effects as infrastructure investments in the rural territory. Severe environmental problems occurred and peasants’ agricultural yields decreased. Water sources were contaminated, and air polluted with haematitic dust. This led to health issues like pneumological diseases and abdominal discomfort. The working conditions on the mine and safety measures were not appropriate leading to numerous work accidents. The population of Bandjeli is enraged and not satisfied with the commodity exploitation and the consequences for development.
