ABSTRACT

In recent years, there has been a specific focus on improving the productivity of the cement industry due to its competitiveness, high energy consumption and increased production of GHG. It has already been observed in various industries that implementation of IOT and AI allows improved productivity, better maintenance and optimum use of energy and resources, in addition to better optimization of the production processes, lower maintenance costs and lower downtime. The application of AI also reduces human interference enabling the best possible monitoring of parameters which helps in achieving better process optimization. In order to achieve these goals there is an increasing introduction of AI-based Asset Performance Management (APM) systems, particularly in the capital-intensive industries. Since the cement industry has kept pace with technological developments all along its long history, it has also been in the race of adopting APM systems. This chapter attempts to review the basics of APM systems, the current practices of the industry to monitor the plant and process performance and its infrastructural preparedness for adopting APM systems. Since the cement industry is highly maintenance-centric, the need for changing the present maintenance practices to predictive maintenance strategy has been highlighted.
