ABSTRACT

Mental disorder is a disease that interfers with the process of thinking and/or behavior that impact decision-making in daily life. If not handled properly, the disease will have a negative impact on people with mental disorders, their family, and society. The article aims to describe the social service practice concerning mental disorders rehabilitation in the Psychology Department of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia in Bandung, Indonesia. The activity was aimed to provide psycho-education to attempt to solve problems related to mental disorders. Participants in this activity were 15 people with mental disorders, 5 social workers, and 15 local civilians. The activities included a presentation about the urgency of social rehabilitation for people with mental disorders, discussion with the local civilians, and observation of the social-life situation of people with mental disorders. The results show that the presentation increased knowledge about the urgency of social rehabilitation. The observation describes how the rehabilitation center provides treatment in the form of workshop making musical instruments such us acoustic and electric guitars, and others instruments from wood and bamboo. The interview shows that the workshop’s wood/bamboo musical instruments can make people with mental disorders calmer and more productive in the rehabilitation center. The implication of this social service practice provides insight to reduce negative stigma about people with mental disorders.
