Cosmetics are topical products that applied onto the human body mainly for purposes of cleanliness. The hallmarks of successful cosmetics are safety, stability, usability, and efficacy. The preference or perception of cosmetics is important in the cognitive process as regards the cosmetics' characteristics. Cosmetics can be in several dosage forms, and the active and functional ingredients are the mandatory key to cosmetic quality. Natural cosmetics are highly in demand on the basis of the consumers' awareness of safety and efficacy, especially those of plant- or phyto-derived products. The fundamental aspects of cosmetic science are therefore introduced in this chapter; differentiation of the terms “cosmetics” and “phytocosmetics” is included as per their general information requirements.
