ABSTRACT

The concept of sustainability regarding cosmeceuticals and phytocosmetics relates to a conscious practice for utilizing natural resources that meets current needs without jeopardizing their availability for future generations. The consideration of the input (collection), supply chain (processing and production), and the output (non-targeted material), guided by regulations, has long been a major factor in the use of natural products in cosmetics. This chapter looks at the challenges concerning the sustainability of phytocosmetics, particularly with respect to their quality control, safety, and accessibility. Also briefly discussed are: (i) the green assessment of the agricultural and developmental aspects of the sourcing, processing, and production of phytocosmetics, (ii) their regulation and sustainability, (iii) the greening of products and their sustainability, (iv) their degradation and disposability, (v) the green consumer, and (vi) the application of emerging technologies. Suggestions for a more sustainable integration of these factors are presented.
