ABSTRACT

The amount of periodically generated data is experiencing a huge boom in its production with the increasing use of various technologies accompanied by the applications in various services that these technologies provide. This rush is thus emerging as the field of big data. Various research studies have pointed out the use of big data analytics (BDA) in smart power grids to find effective and efficient solutions and in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to aid in making reliable and smart network decisions. Big data is an emerging and resourceful application that will become more omnipresent in the future, while we present its applications particularly focused on smart grids (SGs), its effects can be felt reverberating through almost every imaginable field. Big data successfully shapes the blueprints of various SG applications toward a more efficient, flexible, and beneficial production in the future. In this chapter, we present a comprehensive survey of the integration of big data and microgrids. The chapter highlights the problems faced by big data in SGs and comprehensively introduces BDA, architecture, and related tools. The chapter conclusively assimilates the topic of big data analysis in WSNs and their applications in microgrids. Finally, the chapter outlines several open research issues and challenges that can pave way for future research in the related field.
