ABSTRACT

Social media powered by new communication technologies have grown by leaps and bounds over the years. This new form of digital social communication has been the order of the day. The digital media outlets have gained the growing acceptance among the users and still counting. However, social media is grappling with the issue of fake news which needs to be amicably addressed. Feelings or opinions instead of facts are ruling the platforms. The repercussions of fake news are increasingly apparent and drawing the attention of several quarters of the society. In this context, technological intervention is the need of the hour. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in curbing the perils of fake news is of great importance. Again, AI tools have their own advantages and shortcomings. The current chapter attempts to understand the importance of social media in the discourse of digital communication and the incorporation of AI tools in checking the ill effects of fake news on social media platforms.
