ABSTRACT

Sustainable and eco-friendly products are gaining more attention in various engineering industries owing to their considerable strength-to-weight ratio, abundant availability and recyclability. The properties of bio fibers depend on the cultivation method, environmental conditions and extraction method. Bio fibers are extracted by dew retting, water retting and mechanical decortication. The properties of natural fiber–reinforced composites can be enhanced by proper chemical treatments. The intent of this assessment is to propose a complete evaluation of the different extraction methods, methods of treating fiber using chemicals and industrial applications of natural fiber–reinforced composites. Key findings from various existing data and the chemical treatment consequences of the bio fiber–reinforced composite properties are specifically highlighted with critical assessment.
