ABSTRACT

Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) have been found to be the most promising materials to replace many heavy metals in severe working conditions. In this chapter, major forms of wear and wear reduction techniques in PMCs such as coating, lubrication and proper selection of reinforcements are discussed. A review of the various composite reinforcements and their effects on the tribological properties is presented. This chapter reviews the significance of different parameters such as reinforcement volume (%), fiber orientation, size and shape on the wear properties. An advanced level of tribological studies of the polymer composites is essential promote the polymer composites for the development of tribomaterials with energy capability and economic feasibility.
