ABSTRACT
Researchers have been studying ways to create the ultimate smart car. Many smart car systems are built to work in a distributed manner, therefore requiring connection and communication with other systems, over a network that is either wireless or not. Smart cars have started taking over the world and, sooner rather than later, they might become the new normal in the automotive industry. This chapter contains an offer to the automotive industry. On the contrary, it presents a multitude of threats and vulnerabilities that arise via the use of such technology. The chapter is concerned with displaying existing solutions to those problems. As technology evolves, new innovative solutions are presented to counter the threats. The chapter describes the protection mechanisms that have been built and explore some of their possibilities. Lastly, it is dedicated to final conclusions on the matter of smart cars and over-the-air updates with an emphasis on security.
