ABSTRACT

Instructional design is an educational discipline focused on the systematic design and development of education and training to effectively change behaviour and achieve results. This chapter reviews some of the tools of instructional design – the use of a generic curriculum development model, role of instructional objectives and two popular educational evaluation models – to exemplify the conduct a curriculum development project that lends itself more readily to educational research. A well-known generic curriculum development model that remains suitable to most purposes is known as ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation). As in the case of curriculum development models, there are several educational evaluation models that have gained wide acceptance. The diversity of perspective and the comprehensiveness of the evaluation suggested by the types of models described lend themselves to a broad range of research methods. In the end, an example – based on a combination of author's prior experiences in performing and reviewing educational research – is provided.
