ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the importance of integrating primary with secondary care educational research. Integrated educational research is especially relevant for achieving advances in health care towards collaborative interprofessional working. Integrating educational research is an approach to improving the understanding of complex and real-world problems by analysing a question from various points of view. Mutual learning seeks to bring together methods and insights from each individual field to resolve a specific question. Multiple chronic conditions are common, and there is increased worldwide concern to address the growing burden resulting from them. Learning together can bridge boundaries between generalists and specialists, shape successful collaborations and overcome complexities of health care systems. Integrated educational research approaches are needed to address the most complex and critical health care challenges facing health care systems today, including the prevention and management of chronic diseases.
