ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the care of adolescent girls through the lens of Lifestyle Medicine. The six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine – whole food plant-based nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, social connectivity, and substance use prevention – are important to address during the transitional period from adolescence to early adulthood. Techniques such as motivational interviewing and developing specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely (SMART) goals are strategies to engage adolescents. Thoughtful and collaborative discussions about healthy habits can encourage small, incremental lifestyle changes and lay the foundation for a healthy life. These habits, in turn, may lead to prevention of many chronic diseases and lifelong wellness.
