ABSTRACT

The surge of chronic disease over the last few decades has led to a renewed focus on preconceptual health as a means for improving the health of women and their families. Research in the field of epigenetics has shown that environmental toxins, diet, exercise, chronic disease, smoking, alcohol, and stress around the time of conception all play a role in the future health of the offspring. The application of Lifestyle Medicine principles preconceptually is designed to address behavioral change at a critical window of time in order to achieve optimal health of women that has the potential to influence up to three generations. This chapter discusses preconceptual health as a continuum of care for women seeking to improve their own health as well as the future health of their children. The role of Lifestyle Medicine is examined, and practical tools are identified, to help prevent and reduce chronic illness, reduce the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, and improve the overall health of women.
