ABSTRACT

The pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases is complex and multifactorial, including genetic, epigenetic immunological components and various environmental factors. Five percent of the world’s population will develop an autoimmune disease during their lifetime. Seventy-five percent of these patients are women, causing significant morbidity and mortality amongst young and middle-aged women. Autoimmune diseases covered in this chapter are rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune thyroid disease, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors increase the risk and symptoms; healthy lifestyle behaviors show promise in decreasing the risk of development and symptoms of autoimmune diseases.
