ABSTRACT

The chapter captures the progress of the health sector through the intervention of information and communications technology in the last few decades and the further scope it holds to transform the sector in ensuring better services to the citizens and the stakeholders.

Healthcare has become one of the largest growing sectors in the country, in terms of both revenue and employment. It is growing at a brisk pace due to its strengthening coverage, services, and increasing expenditure by public, as well as private, players. The digitization of healthcare products and processes will change the game for every stakeholder in the healthcare ecosystem. To thrive in the era of digital innovation, healthcare companies need to integrate the latest technologies into existing business models and information technology architectures to deliver a best-in-class user experience.

This chapter focuses on the various key initiatives like the e-Hospital project, comprising key applications like e-Hospital (hospital management information system), e-BloodBank (blood bank management system) and ORS—Online Registration System (online patient portal), and Reproductive Child Health, Mother and Child Tracking System, among others. Many of these initiatives have been able to create a significant impact in terms of providing better healthcare facilities to citizens across the country.
