ABSTRACT

The Indian judiciary is one of the most important pillars of Indian democracy. The Constitution of India has given utmost importance to the idea of providing justice to all citizens. Information technology has revolutionized the way justice is provided to the citizens. Information and communications technology is transforming and catalyzing the complex judicial processes which were far beyond the reach of the common man earlier.

The profound impact of the transformation of judicial services felt today is because of the early adoption of information technology by the courts of the country. The chapter covers the transformational journey of courts computerization from the early 1990s to date. The involvement of the judiciary by forming the e-Committee under the aegis of the Supreme Court of India has given a boost to the IT implementation.

The implementation of case information system software in the courts across the country even when procedural laws are different from one state to another is also covered. Initiatives like virtual courts and e-filing have efficiently connected the courts and litigants. The National Judicial Data Grid, recognized as an innovation in the judiciary, has brought transparency and accountability to the system. The chapter also depicts challenges and the potential areas where technology can play a crucial role in the future.
