ABSTRACT

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have wide applications in the field of wastewater treatment and purification. This chapter summarizes the applications of 2D materials for advanced membrane fabrication and photocatalytic treatment of pollutants and microorganisms. Recent advances in the fabrication of water purification membranes using 2D materials such as graphene, graphene oxide, MXenes, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are discussed in detail. Special emphasis is given to the fabrication strategies of various layers in the thin-film composite (TFC) membranes. 2D membrane-based separation of textile dyes, metal cations, heavy metals, and various pharmaceutical products are discussed. Moreover, the chapter also introduces different classes of photo-catalytically active 2D materials (g-C3N4, iron oxide, manganese oxide, metal oxyhalide, boron nitride) and their general mechanism of action in pollutant degradation and disinfection.
