ABSTRACT

A substantial increase in the technological advancement around the globe has resulted in the production and distribution of heavy metals in the environment through various sources. Heavy metals are the elements having a specific gravity greater than 5 g cm-3. Heavy metals cause hazardous consequences when they enter the food chain. Fruits are important dietary constituents containing essential minerals and vitamins required for human health. Citrus reticulata Blano. (Kinnow) is an important fruit commodity in Pakistan. In this chapter, we aimed to discuss the toxicity of heavy metals (arsenic, copper, lead, and zinc), the mechanism of their uptake through plant roots and bioaccumulation in different tissues, plant physiological responses, oxidative stress and various defensive antioxidative activities. Citrus quality and production in response to metal stress, consequent metal accumulation and human health disorders on consumption of such fruit commodities are attributed.
