ABSTRACT

The importance of cutaneous histopathology is such that correct diagnosis of many skin diseases depends on it. At times, the life of a patient rests on a correct pathology diagnosis made in a timely manner. The artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted pathology approach, which is more robust and reproducible, could be a starting point to remedy the challenges of variability and inconsistency we face in our current state of cutaneous histopathology. Digital pathology may help bridge the service gap in those needed areas through the telemedicine approach. A significant survey published in 2019 illustrates concerns among physicians about the integration of AI into diagnostic pathology. A trusting relationship between patients and their physicians is vitally important for medicine, as such a relationship will enhance treatment adherence, self-reported health improvement, and the overall patient experience. While AI technology will continue to improve, more effort will be needed to address other non-technical issues such as medical-legal matters, patients’ trust concern, and physicians’ perspectives.
