ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the necessity of microgrids and their evolution are discussed so that new ideas and concepts may develop. The general architecture of microgrids has been discussed in brief with every component involved in them. The best alternative for good power quality and uninterruptible power services is the microgrid system. For the aim of electrifying each and every house in India and as well as in the world, the development of microgrid systems is a must. It allows access to electricity in remote areas and also encourages the use of non-pollutant energy resources with the help of energy storage technology and other control techniques. The control aspects are to be given more importance for a reliable power supply, and the use of renewable resources such as distributed generation gives a chance for sustainable microgrid systems. Stability issues are also discussed in brief only, but more research is needed on stability issues, too. Finally, the possible future of microgrids as a commercial product is discussed, with political aspects.
