ABSTRACT
Internet of Things (IoT) is considered a crucial emerging technology of the 21st century. IoT is the foundation and an essential engine for future technological progress and economic development. It provides enormous opportunities for organizations. This chapter aims to present the applications, benefits, and challenges of IoT development among Polish enterprises, as well as the assessment issues of IoT in internal and external enterprises operating environment.
In this chapter, three research questions were investigated that concern the scope of the IoT external and internal usage by the organizations, the differentiation of challenges in specific IoT applications, and the most demanding challenges in the case of IoT implementation and utilization in a company. The external IoT system usage was assessed as a priority in the case of information technology, retail, transportation and logistics, and financial services. The IoT applications in business operations were mostly implemented in finance, safety and warehousing, and logistics. The results indicate that the highest importance of IoT concerns challenges related to the lack of international norms and standards. Responders rated that the most demanding IoT challenges for companies are security, privacy, and resource issues.
