ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the security of regional environmental monitoring systems (EMSs) is presented. The reasons why environmental monitoring should also be performed at the local level, complementing the nationwide level, are also determined. The proposed definition of monitoring reflects the instruments currently used for its implementation. A hierarchical organization of the monitoring system is proposed, indicating factors forcing such an organization. Algorithms for the selection of components and the number of hierarchy levels were presented. Next, the architecture and organization of the regional monitoring system are proposed, and the methodology of designing the connection network is presented. Analyzing each of the above issues, security problems are considered in detail, mainly resulting from the use of wired and wireless communication channels, as well as the integration of the Internet of Things components into the system structure. To solve security problems, extensive use of blockchain technology has been proposed. In addition to researchers in the area, this chapter will be interesting for those involved in the design and implementation of EMS and responsible for security in public administration units.
