ABSTRACT

Over the past few years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has become one of the key technologies of the 21st century. Now, every object in this world can relate to each other through the Internet for exchanging data. IoT seems to be a complex infrastructure and interactive elements clustered around three key elements, namely, sensors, informational processors, and actuators. The sensing and actuating utility is not only existing in public places but also extending to many applications such as smart meters to smart grids, digital locks to smart safes, smart vehicles to smart cities, remote to real-time monitoring for smart diagnosis, and medication in the modern health-care devices. There are many types of smart sensors for sensing various parameters such as light, temperature, force, position, speed, sound, chemical, and so on. The objective of the chapter is to focus on the smart sensors, study the characteristics of the smart sensors, and discuss the applications, which are the main building blocks for the IoT infrastructure. This chapter also aims at different materials that are used for smart sensors. A case study of home automation is discussed using smart sensors through Internet-based cloud technology.
