ABSTRACT

Food waste is not waste anymore. Every piece of waste is an opportunity, an opportunity that can be valorized into resources and energy that could be a viable strategy for reducing the environmental impacts of food waste. Essential nutrients and bioactive compounds can be extracted from agro-food waste that would otherwise remain unused. Going into the future, viable approaches for utilizing these wastes for the development of value-added products must be developed and hence are discussed at length in this chapter. The waste biorefinery process employing agro-industrial wastes not only provides energy but also provides ecologically friendly alternatives for waste stream management. The goal of this chapter is to bring attention to the cascading use of biomass from agro-industrial wastes in a systemic approach to achieve sustainable development and boost economic growth.
