ABSTRACT

In this chapter, agro-industrial wastes rich in fatty acids and micronutrients, such as rice bran, marine waste, and oil-rich seeds, are introduced in the first section. In the second section, fatty acid extraction methods are divided into conventional methods, including expression and solvent extraction method and; and non-conventional methods, including supercritical fluid extraction, subcritical water extraction, enzyme assisted extraction, microwave assisted extraction, ultrasound assisted extraction, and pulsed electric field extraction. Each method for extracting fatty acids from the materials listed above is described in detail, including the principle, method, equipment, and some key technical parameters. The properties, chemical composition of the obtained oil, as well as fatty acid composition are given. Furthermore, the methods utilized for fatty acid purification are also presented. The application of the obtained fatty acid in the fields of food, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics is discussed in the last section of this chapter.
