ABSTRACT
In 1928, two research groups in Russia and India simultaneously (with a difference of a week) and independently observed an important non-linear optical process—Raman scattering. Since then the field of non-linear optics has increased in importance and provided us with a significant amount of information about fundamental light–matter interactions and enabled the development of sophisticated new types of optical devices including optical parametric amplifiers and Raman lasers.
