ABSTRACT

Among marine organisms, Echinodermata is an interesting natural source of biological active materials with numerous health benefit effects that could be used as natural ingredients in nutraceutical products. This phylum has a remarkable economic value in the food, pharmacy, traditional medicine as well as in the ornamental industries. Presently, the most popular species from Echinodermata explored in food and nutraceuticals are sea cucumber (teripang in Indonesian) and sea urchin gonads. In this chapter, first we provide an overview on the nutritional and medicinal value of Echinodermata as sources of nutraceuticals. In addition, potency and future prospects of Echinodermata in nutraceuticals as well as sustainable aquaculture to support industrial utilization of Echinodermata are also discussed.
