ABSTRACT

The article is devoted to the study of historical cemeteries (existing and destroyed) as an important component of the urban planning subjects of protection of a historical settlement. For clarity, the analysis of the urban planning structure of one of the largest UNESCO-protected urban planning entities - the World Heritage Site Historical Center of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments has been carried out. The relevance of the work is due to the fact that at present in the historical part of Saint Petersburg there are practically no territories left for development, and the economic and investment attractiveness of the territories is much higher as it approaches the historical center of the city. Thus, in the zone of active development there are territories of historical industrial enterprises and territories for some reason not previously involved in the economic activity. One of these areas is sites of former or destroyed cemeteries. The aim of the study is to consider these territories precisely as an element of the urban development environment with a possible analysis of methods for its conservation and acceptable transformation. For research purposes, the following methods were used: archival and bibliographic, cartographic, analytical, on-field studies. The research has achieved the following results: historical cemeteries have been analyzed as components of the urban planning subject of protection, and existing methods for their conservation and transformation have been evaluated.
