ABSTRACT
The image of the city combining material elements and a wide range of associations is a reflection of ideas about the values of planning, development and urban planning composition that dominate at different stages of the formation and development of the historical urban landscape. At present, at the national and international level, the value of the entire set of elements of the historical environment and the importance of the integrity of urban landscapes in the process of maintaining cultural identity has been recognized. Based on the analysis of the tools for historical environment conservation, the article identifies the most effective methods for preserving the visual image of a historical city, draws conclusions regarding the development of urban planning legislation in the field of protection of visual and compositional relationships of environmental elements, continuous development of historical principles for creating a visual image of a city.
