ABSTRACT

The article discusses numerous examples of applications of cork and cork products (including cork sheets) as insulation, sound absorber and structural material during construction work in Saint Petersburg in the middle of the 19th - especially the beginning of the 20th century. This constructive and decorative material, new to Saint Petersburg, has found wide application. It was used both in ordinary buildings in the center of Saint Petersburg and iconic objects when performing works on the dome of St. Isaac’s Cathedral and in the Yusupov Palace.
