ABSTRACT

The article addresses the prerequisites and specifics of the emergence of remote manors of the nobility through the example of Luzhsky Uyezd. Features of stately manorial estates located in remote uyezds of Saint Petersburg Governorate are described in comparison with standard manors and manor complexes of a similar status located in the uyezds near Saint Petersburg. Specifics of manors’ location and pragmatic use of manorial territories, relations between the settlement structure and geographical characteristics, areas of manorial park and garden complexes inherent in such facilities are identified. Three manors of Luzhsky Uyezd that differ in location features — Nezhgostitsy, Perechitsy and Busany — are described as specific examples. The study is based on scholarly works of the past, extensive archival, bibliographical and cartographical materials, and on-site investigations.
