ABSTRACT

The relevance of this study is conditioned by the lack of access for Saint Petersburg residents and guests to the main panoramas and viewpoints from the embankments of the Neva River and other rivers and canals due to the modern new development of these territories (especially due to the renovation of the gray belt of the city). The purpose of the study is to find ways to restore the embankments’ function of urban public space as well as determine the principles and specifics of further development of new embankments with account for their transformation into a pedestrian public space. In the course of the study, the following methods were used: analysis of the historical experience in embankment formation (as a part of the city structure) in Saint Petersburg, modern theoretical and practical materials on the revival of embankments in favor of pedestrians, as well as on-site surveys. Designs intended to return the historical Petersburg essence to embankments have been suggested, models to eliminate problematic nodes have been formed during experimental sketch design (by bachelor and master students majoring in architecture under the guidance of the authors of the article). The implementation of these suggestions in the design practice will restore the role of embankments in the city, which will increase its tourist potential. The materials of this article may be useful for urban planning authorities.
