ABSTRACT

Preserving the historical, urban-planning and architectural heritage of the central part of Saint Petersburg, developing these territories, and smoothly including them into the life of a modern city require a special approach to solving problems related to the reconstruction and renovation of the historic urban environment. The modern period characterized by the active reconstruction of the historic center puts forward new demands concerning the preservation of cultural heritage sites. If history is seen as the experience underlying modern practice, historical, architectural and urban-planning processes should be revealed by systematizing the existing and recovering missing information. This makes for analysis of spatial and temporal transformations that the city has undergone in its development. Identifying the inner laws of the genesis of these processes is important. The article gives an analysis of the modern state of the city landscapes within the boundaries of the historic part of the Petrogradsky District.
