ABSTRACT

The article is the result of a comprehensive study of a special type of buildings – Houses and Palaces of Culture in Leningrad of the 1920-1930s, including the identification of the main problems of their use and maintenance. The experience of restoration and adaptation of Soviet architecture of the first third of the 20th century totals several decades, and the results of the first restoration work on such buildings cannot be called satisfactory. It becomes obvious that the “new heritage” requires the formation of a special research and restoration methods. “The Subject of Protection” is currently the main document regulating the permissible degree of intervention in the restoration and adaptation of the architectural heritage. The article is based on the results of the detailed author’s study of the Houses and Palaces of Culture in Leningrad and the analysis of the existing subjects of protection for such buildings. The main features of the Houses and Palaces of Culture in Leningrad are determined, methods for supplementing and refining the subjects of protection for such objects is proposed.
